Estrogen Dominance After 40: It's Not Too Much Estrogen
One of the most common misconceptions I correct in my practice is the idea that estrogen dominance means "too much estrogen."
In the vast majority of women over 40, estrogen dominance is actually driven by too little progesterone relative to estrogen, compounded by poor estrogen metabolism and rising insulin resistance.
This is one of the 14 core archetypes, and it explains heavy periods, breast tenderness, irritability, weight gain, and the feeling that "my body is holding on to everything."
The Real Physiology
During perimenopause, progesterone declines first and more dramatically than estrogen. Without adequate progesterone, even normal levels of estrogen become dominant. At the same time, insulin resistance (very common after 40) drives the body to make more estrogen from testosterone via aromatase in fat tissue. Poor liver and gut clearance then recirculates that estrogen.
The result is a relative estrogen dominance pattern that feels miserable.
Clinical Signs I Look For
- Heavy or irregular periods
- Breast tenderness or fibrocystic breasts
- Increased anxiety or irritability
- New belly fat that won't respond to diet
- Water retention and bloating
- Sleep disruption
My LCHPMF Approach to Estrogen Dominance
I start every patient with the foundation:
- Protein anchoring to stabilize blood sugar and lower insulin
- Strategic carbohydrate timing
- Cortisol rhythm restoration
- Gut and liver support (because clearance is half the battle)
Once the foundation is solid, we layer targeted support for progesterone and estrogen metabolism.
