Cortisol Burnout: Exhaustion, Belly Fat & Brain Fog

If you wake up tired, crash in the afternoon, crave salt or sugar by 3 p.m., and lie awake at night with a racing mind, you may be living with cortisol burnout.

This is one of the 14 clinical patterns I see most often in my practice — and one of the most misunderstood.

Cortisol burnout is not "adrenal fatigue" in the old sense. It is a dysregulation of the HPA axis — the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system that controls your stress response, energy, sleep, and metabolism.

Here is exactly what is happening and what actually works to fix it.

The Three Stages of Cortisol Dysregulation I See in Practice

Stage 1 – High Cortisol (Wired but Tired)
You feel "on edge" all day. Sleep is light. You can push through but pay for it later.

Stage 2 – Flattened Cortisol Rhythm
Morning cortisol is low, afternoon is flat, evening is inappropriately high. You have no energy to start the day and can't wind down at night.

Stage 3 – Burnout Pattern
Cortisol is low across the board. Profound fatigue, salt cravings, dizziness on standing, and immune suppression.

Most patients I see are in Stage 2. Their conventional doctor checks a single morning cortisol and says "normal."

Why Cortisol Burnout Causes Belly Fat

When cortisol rhythm is off, insulin becomes dysregulated. The combination locks fat in visceral storage and makes it nearly impossible to burn. This is why so many patients tell me "I'm doing everything right and the weight still won't come off."

The LCHPMF Approach to Cortisol Burnout

I never start with supplements or hormone replacement. I start with the foundation:

  • Protein anchoring every meal to stabilize blood sugar
  • Strategic carbohydrate timing (no carbs after sunset)
  • Consistent sleep window (same bedtime and wake time 7 days a week)
  • Morning sunlight and evening dim light
  • The 7-Day Protein Reset as the clinical on-ramp

Once the foundation is in place, we layer targeted support based on the patient's full pattern.

The free assessment at Take the free Hormone & Metabolism Assessment will tell you if cortisol dysregulation is one of your active patterns. LEO — my AI clinical assistant — can then walk you through the exact next steps in my voice.
