Nutritional Supplementation
Know Your Grade:
Pharmaceutical Grade = the highest quality grade supplements. This means the purity, dissolution, and absorption meet the highest regulatory standard verified by a third party. They might be available without a prescription but are often only sold by licensed practitioners.
Medical Grade = high-quality supplement that may/ may not meet the standards of pharmaceutical-grade supplements (prenatal vitamins typically fall into this category).
Cosmetic/ Nutritional Grade = supplements sold in health food stores. These supplements might not always be tested for absorption, dissolution, or purity or have the same concentration of active ingredients as listed on the label.
Feed/ Agricultural Grade = supplements produced for veterinary use.
Why It’s Important:
Your supplement’s ability to work effectively in and for your body varies greatly depending on which form you choose. Since not all supplements are created equal, you only know you’re getting the ideal form if you’re buying from a trusted practitioner/ source.
To ensure you’re purchasing a high-quality supplement, choose a pharmaceutical-grade form. Pharmaceutical-grade supplements are primarily sold by doctors, nurse practitioners, compounding pharmacists, or chiropractors who work hand-in-hand with the companies that manufacture and deliver them to guarantee the proper storage, fulfillment, and use of the products. At that high level of care, everyone’s goal is to see the quality of these supplements reflected in the improving health of the people who use them.
How To Choose:
To know the supplements you’re purchasing are pharmaceutical grade:
Verify the manufacturer is Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certified.
Review the laboratory analysis, assays, and disintegration studies performed by the manufacturer.
Verify the manufacturer has completed human trials on their supplements to ensure they are safe and effective.
Verify the manufacturer or fullfillment company safely stores and ships their products.
Or . . . seek out a licensed practitioner who has already done the work for you and can help you determine which supplements are appropriate for your personal needs and goals.
